Script Kiddie 101 : Online Vote Fraud

I've always heard about stories of vote fraud online such as when 4channers stuffed the box for the Time's Person of the Year polls. However I had no idea that even today, any script kiddie with python could stuff a ballot.

Without much ado, here's a little something I cobbled together using google. (attached).

How does it work?

The Southern Restaurant in Nashville

This restaurant has good food! I visited about a month ago with my roommate for Saturday's brunch. We ordered raw oysters and burgers.

We got 4 pacific and atlantic oysters. They predictably tasted fresh albeit a bit salty and fishy, not my cup of tea. The burgers were a bit on the expensive side ~$15 including a side of fries. The quality of the meat was appreciable but not best in class when compared to for instance Fido's Localburger. It was still a good meal.

TAO, SNES and PETSC

I've recently been (forced) to learn about PETSC and though I was unhappy at first, its power and functionality has slowly won me over. For those who require parallel computing and speed (stuff our lab does), PETSC gives the functionality to split large jobs (e.g. matrix solves) amongst different processing threads.

Prelim Decision

The director of graduate studies tallied the votes and it was a tie. Half the faculty wanted to keep him and half wanted him kicked out. Everyone looked at Professor Joon who had curiously abstained from voting. He cocked one eyebrow, and said, "I will challenge him to Starcraft".

TN Amazon Tax

I don't see why they don't just get Amazon to charge the tax for us as a VAT. http://www.nashvillescene.com/pitw/archives/2012/04/25/amazons-tennessee...

Backing up your files

Today I learned that instead of shelling out for a backup software, you can simply use the xcopy command to perform all your data safekeeping needs.

Real World Curves in Solidworks

A short tutorial on converting laser scanner data into solidworks surfaces.

Things you need:

Laser Rangefinder--you either have one or you can build one e.g. http://www.david-laserscanner.com/

Solidworks

Geomagic Studio

Acquring Point Cloud

Use the range scanner to get yourself some data. Assuming you can only scan one side at a time, you'll want to have overlapping scans to get good alignment. If possible put some landmarks onto your surface e.g. putty/play-doh.

Heart Beat Detection script

Here's a small script I wrote for detecting contractions (beats) in cardiac myocytes. The input is a series of timepoints vs sarcomere lengths. I first used a moving average to smooth the data and took the derivative to look for changes in value i.e. a contraction corresponds to decreasing moving average (detection is threshold based). The slew rate is calculated based off the estimated start/end contraction time points. Finally quality control is implemented using a scatter plot to show where the detected points are.
